Jill and I dined at Lokal (1904 W. North Ave.), a trendy European lounge that features slightly more elevated European cuisine with a strong focus on Polish grub. While all the food was solid, the standout of the night was our appetizer – their steak tartare.
Lokal uses high quality raw Filet Mignon which was prepared and seasoned with excellent technique. The meat was placed in a traditional mold and a small quail egg was gently cracked over the dish. Accompanied by toasted rye, Cornichon pickles and pickled onions, the dish as a whole was fresh and extremely flavorful, while not being too filling and heavy. This was a solid version of the French dish through the use of superb product, proper seasoning, and attention to detail.
